Robotics and Automation in Construction Engineering: Improving Safety and Productivity
Main Article Content
Abstract
The construction industry is witnessing a paradigm shift through the integration of robotics and automation, which promise to enhance safety, productivity, and cost-effectiveness. This paper examines the current state of robotic technologies in construction, focusing on how autonomous and semi-autonomous systems mitigate risks and streamline repetitive tasks. By reviewing empirical studies, simulation analyses, and realworld deployment case studies, we assess the impact of robotics on injury rates, schedule acceleration, and quality control. Two graphical analyses illustrate (i) the tradeoff between robot deployment and accident reduction, and (ii) productivity gains relative to manual labor over project phases. The article also discusses challenges such as human–robot collaboration, trust, regulatory hurdles, and cost barriers, and proposes a framework for effectively implementing robotics to maximize safety and efficiency.
